Not true. Most companies use patents as they were intended, to allow them to profit from their innovation, or as a defensive measure, to prevent others from patenting their innovations and for cross licensing. As far as negotiations with Google, if Google wanted to produce something that was nearly Java, but modified to suit their needs, shouldn't they pay something to Sun for the work that they were copying, for creating Java in the first place? I am sure Sun thought so. Sun didn't want to sue Google, they wanted a piece of the pie, and for Google to not damage the Java brand in the process.
