google:- difference between solaris and opensolaris
brings up numerous pages worth checking out and shed some light on your
question.

Just as a bit of advice prior to downloading the operating system you might
find it advisiable to run the Sun Device Detection Tool to see if all your
hardware is supported rather than downloading the o/s trying to install it, and
finding that a piece of hardware won't work. You'll find the tool at the
following address:-

http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.jsp

There's numerous amounts of documentation availiable to you just google or use
the search tool of your choice

as far as your question which to install perhaps I'm not the one to ask as I'm
running OpenSolaris on my Desktop & Laptop and although I've downloaded Solaris
10 I haven't been able to find time to install it. My guess is that coming from
Windows that OpenSolaris would probably ease you into unix.
Hope you enjoy.
