There are two distributions of the OpenSolaris codebase produced with the direct involvement of Sun. One is called "Solaris Express Community Edition" (SXCE) and is available as a series of 6 CDs or a single DVD. This does not have "live CD" functionality. The other distribution of OpenSolaris is called "OpenSolaris" and is currently at version 2008.05 . There are also test versions of the next release, 2008.11, available. This does have live CD functionality and can also be installed to your hard disk. The live CD functionality is simply provided as an "added extra".
