So, I did some more research and based on the gdm/Xorg logs (below).  My 
font.dir's weren't created so I created all of them with mkfontdir -e <dir>.  
xfs was disabled, so I enabled that just for kicks and grins.  And I'm still 
getting the darned "could not open default font 'fixed' ".. even though an 
fc-list shows me "fixed" fonts.  Help!
