Biggest reason for me to select an OS for development is how much resource the OS itself consume and how much faster NetBeans, Glassfish,.... run on that particular OS in my current hardware.
CPU : Intel 3 Ghz HT, 2MB cache RAM: 2GB DDR2 So, I will choose to go with OpenSolaris if it perform better and so on. Regard zones, I think zones are not as effective as they must be, A zone is an slice of underlying solaris OS which is isolated from other parts. So, I think if hosting OS (Solaris) fails then All zones will fail. Another restriction of Zones could be current restriction that a zone can not host other OSs, and it just provides a container that other OSs application run within the zone.
