Dear all, this is going to become a long story, I apologise in advance already, but I really need your help. I'm totally lost with my problem.
It all started when I have put some more memory into my computer and tried to re-install OpenSolaris (2009.06 based on b111a, i.e. latest .iso from genunix.org at the time of writing). In the beginning, I could start up the LiveCD properly and start the installation process. However, when the installation was running, the computer suddenly wanted to reboot. Well, this didn't really work so the screen went all black (actually switched off due to no signal) and the computer was dead. Even the reboot button didn't work anymore, only a power cycle helped. This happened a couple of times. Sometimes, the LiveCD didn't even start up properly anymore, the computer rebooted already after showing the three lines "SunOS ... ... ... license terms." Starting the LiveCD with the boot option -kd to start the kernel debugger didn't really show anything interesting, because IT WENT FINE! I could install OpenSolaris 2009.06, b111a. (Sure, when you want to get to the roots of a problem, it disappears... Mr. Murphy is omnipresent). However, now I have the problem that the computer doesn't boot into OpenSolaris. Same symptoms: reboots at some (non-deterministic) time during the boot process, i.e. the reboot is not properly initialised, obviously, because the whole machine crashes terribly. Only power cycles (off/on) get it starting again. I tried to boot with the debugger attached, but that didn't help: after the CPUs were powered on there were some messages scrolling through very quickly and the machine went into the described "crash mode". Also, I have tried to start with -B intel-iommu=no, but that didn't change anything. Same again... Here are my system specifications: Mainboard: ASUS DSGC-DW, BIOS version 1008 (latest, all of the above happened with version 1004 (originally shipped) as well) CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X355 RAM: 8x Qimonda FB-DIMM, 4GB each, DDR2-667 Graphics: Gainward 9400GT (nVidia), no external power (all power from PCIe) HDD: 3x Seagate 750 GB HDD: 1x WD 1000GB (this is where the OS goes) PSU: Enermax Revolution85+, 850W BIOS setting: Memory Branch Mode: Sequential (however, also happens with "Interleave") >From the BIOS I can see that the FB-DIMMs show a temperature between 75 and 95 >degree centigrade. Is this too much? Is this a reason why the computer behaves >like this? Before the memory upgrade, I had 2x 2GB Kingston memory built in, same module temperature, but more or less stable (it crashed as described about once a week). Do I have a serious hardware problem? Or do I miss some boot parameters that would be suitable for my setup? I'm totally lost here and your help is highly appreciated! Thanks for reading through all my sermon and for your kind help in advance! Cheers, Manfred -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
