Ok.  So it may have decided to use the nvidia driver,
but fails because it didn't autodetect valid video modes
for the connected monitor?

I've cc-ed the xwindow forum, where the nvidia video driver
experts may provide some answers.

Is it possible to run the nvidia-SunOS-bug-report.sh script
on the livecd and attach it's output, so that we can get
some more information about your system and how the
nvidia driver fails?

With the failed VESA mode boot, what is logged to Xorg.0.log?
