After a fun day playing about with this I've come to the conclusion that this
is a hardware fault.
I installed opensolaris and got the PBR error, then I installed Fedora and on
reboot got the same error. Both times I trashed and recreated the partitions on
the disk and the installs ran OK but I got the bad PBR sig error on reboot, so
this wasn't a partition or a OS issue.
I then got an old disk out of the drawer and ran through the same procedure and
got the same results. So that rules out a faulty disk.
I tried this newly installed disk in another PC and it booted up immediately.
Also, at one point my knackered PC was having problems booting off the cdrom
which is another reason why I think I've got a faulty motherboard.
