SXDE has Gone Away. OpenSolaris has (nominally) replaced it.

Probably, but I don't know off the top of my head.

The primary difference, now, is that OpenSolaris uses the Image
Packaging System for package management, and integrates system
with IPS/ZFS (see beadm).

Solaris Express also contains closed drivers and other code which
is not freely redistributable.

Both OpenSolaris and SXCE now support zfsroot, which until
recently was another major difference.

That is incorrect. If their drivers are built properly, they
should (probably) work on any Solaris. The only reason I can
think this would be the case is if their driver requires some
closed code. OpenSolaris does not contain anything closed, so in
that case SXCE would be needed.

OpenSolaris is primarly focused on the desktop, but I knew a few
people who use it for servers (specifically fileservers) these
days.
