I've already destroyed and recreated the pool so can't do that. But the zpool status tank results are in the first and second post from when I plugged in the device and when I gave it the dd treatment.
FWIW I proceeded as you mentioned but the replace failed with a message about the device already being active, after which I tried a replace -f which also failed after which I made the device offline and did the dd thing (which killed the pool :-D) -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
