Back with more noise :( While getting the NIC running in S10 I had a crash on reboot: ATA timeout. I have seen this a few times before and when it happens when system files have been touched it can make things unbootable. Like it did this time.
That aside, while trying to reinstall I ran into the "invalid fdisk information" problem again. This time clearing the active flags (on all drives!) didn't let me get past it. Fortunately a failsafe reboot updated the boot archive and S10 became bootable again so it isn't an immediate problem. Any thoughts re what can upset fdisk in this way?
