Additional information to my POST: Note that the exact same error messages (and number of them) occurs whether or not the FireWire cable that attaches the two (daisy chained) SATA drives is connected. So the FireWire connection has nothing to do with the problem.
However, when I change the cabling configuration such that each of the two external SATA drives is connected via two USB cables (instead of through FireWire), then Solaris see those two external drives -- but still does not see and of the four internal SATA drives. So it seems the problem isn't necessarily with use of SATA drives, as it is with using directly connected SATA drives, since SATA drives connected through a USB interface works. So my problem remains, since I do need to install Solaris on one of the internally *directly* connected SATA drives. TIA again.
