Perhaps. And perhaps the driver has a shortcoming. Impossible to say
which with the information presented thus far.

One accurate way to classify this (for the interested developers who might
be plugged in) is as follows:

   Using the facilities provided in the BIOS, all SATA drives have been 
prevented
   from participating in RAID. I described how earlier, but basically you go to
   each drive and make sure that "On with RAID" is not selected for it. (Note
   that there is no programmatic way in the BIOS of disabling the RAID
   controller itself; perhaps, if possible, that is a jumper setting).

   Having done this, do the attributes these devices expose themselves with
   to the operating:

        (1) Conform to standard, in which case the "nv_sata" driver should be
             looked at to be fixed for, or to handled this case.

        (2) Doesn't conform to standard, in which case the BIOS is the culprit.

        (3) Is "undefined/mangled" (for lack of a better term) due to a BIOS 
bug.

        (4) et al.

To the average person who owns an XPS-720 (and perhaps other variant
models), the drives are not involved in RAID in this case, if one is to believe
the BIOS. The truth? Unknown. But what I can say is that under XP and
Fedora Core 5, what the O/S sees, follows in step with the BIOS configuration
(e.g. they configure 1 drive for a BIOS mirrored pair; and 2 drives when it is
dismantled).
