[Seems I conduct a lot of monologues here] With some off-line help I dared to simply 'sh NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-96.43.01.run'. That cleanly removed the new version and added the old one. I also deleted xorg.conf. Only after a reboot nvidia was used as driver, and everything looks smoothly. I could even add compiz-0.6.2 using the installer from Erwann's blog. Following the instructions, I only had to prkrm SFECompiz (pkgrm SUNWxwplt && pkgadd SUNWxwplt as indicated was not needed) to get back what I had before.
