Because the installer isn't designed for having drivers with multiple versions
for different hardware - nvidia's support model is different than the one Sun
normally uses - it assumes that the latest version of the driver package is
always the best one. I think the "constraints" feature proposed for the new
IPS packaging system under development may help solve this issue.

/usr/X11/bin/Xorg -configure should work just fine - it's pretty much the same
Xorg as Linux & BSD use.

Yes, but one of the reasons for biweekly builds is to check that,
and bugs are found in some of the builds, which will be fixed in
future builds, so it may not always work.

rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf - if that file isn't present, Xorg autoconfigures
itself.
