Okay I've dug up an answer from the vmware forum archives that had previously
evaded me. Here is the problem: http://communities.vmware.com/message/776774

OpenSolaris sees the ATA-4 adapter that Vmware uses and explicitly limits the
size of the disk to the size limit specified in ATA-4. OpenSolaris is unique
in doing this.

Other operating systems apparently just let the size become what it may, rather
than artificially limiting it.

It seems to me that a fix or workaround is needed on the OpenSolaris side,
because the only solution on the virtualization side is to wait for
virtualization companies to implement new virtual ATA adapters.

Does anyone know why the code is set up to manually limit disk sizes in this
way? If there is no good reason for it, maybe a quick fix could be made.
