Using sys-unconfig is the easiest way to configure your network card manuall if you didn't set it during the initial install. You need to set the default gateway correctly otherwise setting the DNS will fail. It should not matter what you set the domain name to, as long as you have the default gateway set and at least one valid DNS server set. Can you possibly post the error messages which you are getting, as well as the output of the following commands:
