Lars,

thanks for the suggestions, a new account does not have the same trouble, the
new accoutn however does pop up the bug-buddy each login as the "show desktop"
applet that is default installed crashes with each login.

ok , it appears the problem is associated with the services panel, accessed
thru the menu->administration-> services.

each time I log in, the window comes up at start, is 'greyed' out, sessions are
not being saved, I have deleted the "save sessions" files in the gnome settings
several times. yet, I am getting 3 or 4 windows, ie terminals, the services
panel and a copy of nautilis coming up each login.

two other facts,

logging out leaves the processes running, so each time I log back into the
account, new spawns are created, so log out and in four times and get four
copies of the perl script running simultaneously. in essence creating a 'viral'
behaviour

initrd also owns anothe copy of both the services-admin and its spawned perl
script, i had not looked far enough up in the ps list and missed this before.

so, now i see both initrd
AND gnome doing the same thing.

this is freaking me out, i may need the patronizing people in white coats and
meds soon
