In the settings manager (the thing you get if you click on Preferences
next to "custom set of effects"), look in the top section for General
Options. The last tab is Desktop Size. At least that's what I have
with build 126.
Caution: only change the Virtual Size settings. I tried changing
"Number of Desktops" to something other than 1, and I got all sorts of
weird behavior.
Good find. Using gconf-editor as I mentioned before and your method
above both revealed 6, which is what I have for desktops.
