Whether to trust the on-board SATA controllers is difficult to answer if you don't provide the motherboard info. As for Intel vs. Marvell, Sun uses Marvell chipsets on some of its Sun Fire servers. As an example, the Sun Fire x4500 uses the same Marvell SATA chipset as the Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 you mentioned. So, one would believe this card would be a safe bet. Don't know about the Marvell you have on-board as you don't mention which chipset it is.
Don't have any experience with the card beyond putzing around with 2009.06. I purchased two off of eBay for $50ea for a box I was in the process of building as a replacement server for my home that would run OpenSolaris. Unfortunately OpenSolaris' future is too cloudy for me to commit to it just yet.
