Having rpool mirrored on a second disk seemed to be the cause of the "unknown external error".
Having detached the second disk, and checking that a new BE will activate, I've tried several times to update to b142, but all attempts fail with this sort of message: g...@opensolaris_b134:/opt$ pfexec ./onu.sh -Ot on-nightly-142.i386 -u http://localhost:13000 PHASE ACTIONS Removal Phase 54/54 Creating Plan | Errors were encountered while attempting to retrieve package or file data for the requested operation.
