Having rpool mirrored on a second disk seemed to be the cause of the "unknown
external error".

Having detached the second disk, and checking that a new BE will activate, I've
tried several times to update to b142, but all attempts fail with this sort of
message:

g...@opensolaris_b134:/opt$ pfexec ./onu.sh -Ot on-nightly-142.i386 -u
http://localhost:13000

 (happened 4 times)

pkg -R /tmp/onu.wGaive image-update failed: exit code 1
g...@opensolaris_b134:/opt$

It seems weird to me that the first attempt got through to the end of the
update OK, but all later attempts founder on "Not found"

The md5 checksum of the on-nightly-142.i386.tar.bz2 is correct. Any ideas ?
