Some progress - now have onnv-142 installed but can only boot to xterm. Attempting a gnome session still leads to reboot (as in first post - so maybe unknown external error was nothing to do with the mirror ?)
Running gnome-session from xterm reports " Could not connect to session bus.......", and later "GConf error - see http://projects.gnome.org/gconf"; Didn't really get any clues from that link. Tried gnome-cleanup but doesn't help, dbus service is online. The only striking behaviour I see is that I can start nautilus in xterm and browse the filesystem - if I try to access my Home directory I get immediate reboot. Any help much appreciated.
