I certainly hadn't seen your further remark about your NTFS format etc. when I 
replied this morning. And apologies that my suggested commands were 
"approximate" - anyway you got to menu.lst and IMHO it looks as it should. 

I've never had reason to use "fixmbr" so I've no idea what it has done (in 
detail!). If your WinXP installation is too important to reinstall my only 
other guess is to try a boot manager which might identify where your grub has 
gone and intervene before Windows takes charge - unfortunately I can't suggest 
one that is freeware (In the past I've used OSLOADER - $30). A very inelegant 
solution I agree. But things do seem to be messed up now.
