I think it was a side-effect. I've again poked around in CVS' manual page and
still cannot find an option which lets CVS move obsolete files to Attic on
imports. So, seems we haven't done a mistake. Instead we have to remove the
obsolete files ourself manually.

I've personally no objection to incorporate your VMS patches. The problem is
just that we cannot support it, because AFAIK no one of the OpenSSL core team
members has access to VMS ;-). But that shouldn't mean your stuff cannot be
included. But it should perhaps at least stay in a separate directory and the
makevms.com should be there, too. Nevertheless you should at least post your
changes to this list, so we can make a better decision.
