Jon,
I also am still unable to get XMMS to play mp3 files, but Amarok does 
them and everything else nicely.  I suspect if you have updated Amarok 
lately you just may need to change the engine you are using.  I know 
from the opensuse list that some of them are not working well.  I use 
"arts" and don't seem to have problems.  I really haven't tried the 
others to test, so can't remark on them.

Not sure what is wrong with XMMS, it's unusual that it doesn't work.  I 
have even updated to the packman build and still no mp3 playback, plus 
the main window looks funny, which leads me to believe it's not happy 
with GTK+ right now.
