Start shutdown and immediately key Ctrl-Alt-F10 and watch the
stream of messages. Usually you will get a clue in the last few lines
before it freezes. Have pen/paper or digital camera handy.

Aha, that's given me something. I see a number of recursive faults, and notice
that gdm is one of the processes that is reported.
In my /var/log/warn file, I find this (note that on reboot, there's a long
stream of transaction replays, so I don't know if something might have been
lost, in particular, I didn't find gdm in the /var/log/warn file, but that was
about the last complaint on-screent, and the first in this dump appears to be
X, which doesn't seem inconsistent, and also ties in with that gut feeling that
this had something to do with changing screen modes)
Question becomes, if this is a failing in the X driver, what should I do next?
For that matter, what makes sense next even if it isn't a failing in the X
driver :)
Cheers and thanks again,
Simon
