For what it's worth, I tried KsCD after reading this thread and it didn't
work. When I tried Amarok it worked just fine. Is using KsCD mandatory?

No, Randall. KsCD is not mandatory. I have Amarok 1.3 installed, but I
don't see how to get it to play anything. I tried File | Play media ...
and then in the file selection box that appears, selected
/dev/cdrecorder, /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd, all of which sounded likely,
but none of them worked. I got a message saying, "Some media could not
be loaded (not playable)": but I know it is playable, because I can play
it from the same drive in XP.
Perhaps I'm missing something?
