Ok...

I plan to start working with Java 6, soon, and will install Sun's
release, naturally. I don't really expect any problems (since they've
never occurred before), but I'm curious about what might have gone
wrong for Simon.
I'm the one who claimed that it doesn't work as well as rpm's. There
are lots of people on this list who think I'm stupid. Some will
undoubtedly write to list that I'm so stupid that I should not be
allowed to use SUSE. They are all correct of course... but still I
plan to use this (as I like YaST).
The installer probably works, but I just do not know how to use it.
That's what it is. What I wrote earlier was based on previous try with
1.5 update 8 or 9 (I think bundled with Net Beans). This is what
happened then:
I downloaded the installer and started it. It quickly became obvious
that I was not able to install it for all users (it didn't ask for
instance if I want to install it for all users or just me and ask for
root passwd). So I hit cancel and try again as root. This time it
asked me where to install it. And I just didn't know! I've used SuSE
with YaST for years without having to know where the programs go. I
didn't know.
Now I tried the new installer. This time no GUI but CLI which just
unpacked it under my home dir. Trying "java -version" showed that it
was not installed as I wanted. Yes, the files were probably there and
after couple of mv's and ln's it would probably worked. I just didn't
know which.
Contrast this with rpm that automatically goes to the right place and
is configured correctly. And just works (tm).
So, that's why I'm hoping somebody that can (I really thank you guys!)
will have the time to make a rpm for SUSE out of things like java.
That way stupid users like me can enjoy SUSE.
