If you are having that problem, 
terminate the updater
open a root shell, 
rczmd stop
cd /var/lib/zmd 
  and delete the .db file there in
rczmd start
then restart the updater.

This usually solves the slows.  Also useful:
Get rid of kernel.org mirrors, they are slow and unreliable.
Get rid of unused or duplicate mirrors because they all
have to be resolved and cross checked.

Do these changes with yast BEFORE you do the above
database delete, and you end up with a fairly clean and
reasonable quick updater.
