After installing KDE packages evoke rcxdm restart as root in the konsole
e.g. F1. However I don't know if the 'prefetch' of your login-manager
doesn't store the settings. If I recall correctly I had something
similar on SUSE 10. Thus I'm just guessing on it.

BTW, Additionally I would also create a new user for just kde.
I've experienced some mess with the desktop settings while using gnome
and kde on the same user /home/folder, especially using baghira and
kxdocker.
