I use Thunderbird myself - I have 7 e-mail accounts and all of them are directed to the Local Folders Inbox. My Mail folder under .thunderbird is 2.3GB in size right now. The thing is, I have over 200 separate folders set up under Local Folders, and I have a large number of filters configured to automatically sort the e-mail into separate folders for the many mailing lists I subscribe to, as well as e-mail form vendor companies, etc. I don't have a speed problem that I can see. I do need to do some maintenance on my openSUSE mailing list folder as it currently has over 44,000 e-mails in it. :-) At any rate, this folder takes about 5 seconds to open when I click on it, so it's not TOO bad. For reference, I'm using a 2.0GHz AMD Athlon processor w/1GB Ram,, and a 7200RPM 200GB drive on this box.
