Cant open /sys/class/net//address’: No such file or directory
This (slightly misformatted) error strongly suggests a timeout problem with the network card. This timeout has been increased in newer base versions.

Updating to a newer base version should fix this problem. (Don't forget to make a snapshot or backup before updating.)

And as Glen suggested, it is also advisable to use the 64bit kernel whenever possible, as this is simply a more recent kernel version (with better device drivers) than the 32bit variant.
