Thanks Eero, I’ll try that too. I saw you’re earlier comment on this but was
hoping to get Kali updated. I may be able to get this working before the
pre-built VM is done downloading!

How about installing Centos 7 / RHEL 7 and then just installing openvas8 from
atomic repo?

I think it's easiest way for "newbies".

No offense, but given that there seems to be some lack of knowledge about
Linux systems and building programs from sources, you might want to consider
using one of the pre-built VMs that are available on http://openvas.org/vm.html
instead. This will probably save you a lot of hassle

well, sounds like running in circles when you follow the list.........

Reindl, I originally tried building a VMWare image from the .iso but ran
into a lot of problems and it didn't work at all, so when I saw the
pre-built VMWare image I started using that. I'll try building the VMWare
image from an iso again.

who in the world needs that way as well as a pre-built vmware image when you
just go to https://www.kali.org/downloads/, download the ISO image, insert
it into the virtual DVD drive and just install it inside the VM as on any
ordinary PC?
