Well, it turns out I had an odd DNS resolution problem [looks like a cached 
bad-answer] that had the client going to a bogus IP. [So, you were right, it 
was a server non-response. Might I mention though, dev-group, that that timeout 
message is worse than worthless. Might as well have it say "Something went 
wrong." That would at least be intelligible. :) ]

Once I fixed that, we're in business.

Sorry for the noise - but it was quite an odd issue. [I should have noticed the 
wrong IP in the log, but when the FQDN was correct in the config, I didn't 
think to look closely.]
