Thanks for the tip, it now loads the firmware, but the interface still
doesn't show up. 
I flashed some dd-wrt image that worked previously on the device. It looks
like they have 
eeproms bundled along. 
I checked the actual data in the mtd partition with dd-wrt's bundled
eeproms - looks like 
everything is correct, all have the 50 30 00 header. Can it be some kind
of rfkill/gpio-controlled power circuit in there?
I'll experiment with dd-wrt's eeproms later and post the results.
