Comment (by johnllyon@…):

 This is the first of several posts. I'm keeping them separate to aid
 clarity and organization.

 So I installed the latest snapshot, which should incorporate Cyrus's
 changes. I now get a different error. Instead of the message "ping6:
 sendto: Operation not permitted," I get the following:

 {{{
 root@OpenWrt:/etc/config# ping6 www.google.com
 PING www.google.com (2607:f8b0:4009:803::1011): 56 data bytes
 ^C
 --- www.google.com ping statistics ---
 157 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
 }}}

 So, I can resolve the AAAA record for google.com, and the ping command
 attempts to send IPv6 ICMP packets out, but all of them die. I have no
 idea at this point whether the problem is with my ISP or with OpenWRT, but
 I will investigate further.
