Short answer: yes
Many Wifi chips are reseted under certain circumstances by their driver
core.. for instance if the chip hangs.. a watchdog routine will trigger a
hw reset. Just look at the the relevant ath9k code in main.c and mac.c to
understand which conditions trigger a hw reset.

Please help with testing here and take the needed time, as this issues
seems to affect many OpenWRT & ath9k users.
