I patched my Makefile and compiled a firmware using this patch.
Even though there remained some warnings about some files being to big,
i ended up with several files, including
openwrt-ar71xx-generic-ap121-8M-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin (~7.5MB)
when i try to flash my device, this is what i end up with:
