I came across OpenWrt and it seems suitable for what I need, but most of the supported hardware are routers with multiple LAN ports, 802.11n, and USB, which is probably overkill for my application. I was wondering if OpenWrt will work on some of the smaller print server type devices, with one USB port, one LAN and/or WAN interface.I don't know whether OpenWrt runs on any print servers, but a slightly more expensive solution would be any of the low-end NAS servers from Pogoplug, Seagate, iomega, or Buffalo. It should be possible to install OpenWrt, or a minimal version of a more "mainstream" distro like Debian, to the internal flash memory on any of these. And you can install almost any distro if you use boot from an external USB flash drive. -- Eric Cooper e c c @ c m u . e d u
Routers are likely more of a commodity item than print servers so there may not be any added cost for the extraneous features. You may want to consider the TP-LINK TL-MR3220 router which should be readily available for ~$40US. A low-end NAS can occasionaly be found in this price range as well. Adorama.com (US) currently lists a pogoplug for $39.99. You will get more cpu/ram/flash with a plug computer, but they aren't always available at this price.
