I don't get what you mean exactly with "suitability", could you define the parameters you want to know? Also OpenWRT is just a base distribution, so it will depend on the applications/protocols you want to use. There are many flavors of software combinations which gives you the opportunity of deploy a mesh network.

In Guifi.net [0] (Catalonia) we are starting to use qMp [1], which is a meta-distribution of OpenWRT.
But you also have the software from Freifunk [2] and many others.

BTW, if you want to know more about mesh networking you should come to the Battle Mesh in April [3].
