I dont think it matters if they were true or not- Google and every other walled 
garden uses spam as an excuse, and a poor excuse at that. Anybody can cut down 
on spam by reducing access- real programmers/engineers/admins accept the 
challenge of providing quality, open systems. This whole move says to me that 
the talent they used to have behind the scenes does not work for Google 
anymore. 

(or I guess just that decisions now come from someone at the top worrying about 
shareholders, instead of spending their time trying to cultivate the culture 
that we all admired in wee baby Google)
