I am inclined to say that it is ok to make it required, as long as there are 
(will be) packages available for Ubuntu. If *most* users/developers can easily 
satisfy the prerequisite by apt-get install I'm ok with it. Of course anyone 
using a different system (like myself) gets a little more hassle, but in my 
experience ert is a quick and easy install from source as well.
