I think the argument should be the other way around. Why should they be mandatory? Making things mandatory makes them more fragile. To me there really has to be value in adding that fragility. Also, I've been persuaded to drop device-type because nobody can easily define such a thing, and it requires serious consideration elsewhere (like in t2trg). Eliot
