Can you please answer the questions I asked Karsten then - specifically

- does your DB has had the minimum recommended settings put on it 
(http://docs.opsview.org/doku.php?id=opsview-community:mysql#mysql_tuning) and 
how much load is on the system at the time.   

- How long from starting the report generation off to getting the report?  It 
may also be the client connection is being closed due to no communication being 
sent through the link - this could be due to the db search for a particular 
piece of SQL taking longer than the default timeout period - have a look at 
setting 'wait_timeout' for mysqld in the my.cnf file if this is the case (I 
believe the default is around 15 seconds).
