You should have no problems using nohup, I use it all the time, and it will
continue to run, regardless of whether you terminate your telnet session.

One change I would make it

nohup sqlplus system/******* @long_running.sql > /ora/log/logfile.log &

1. Add the "> /ora/log/logfile.log" to capture any output from the process
2. Add the ampersand (&) to push the process into the background.

To check the process is running, either do a cat on the log file, or check
for processes running, or issue the "jobs" command

If you are still not sure, test it with a small sql that runs for a couple
of minutes
and outputs to a log file.

Sql file could be like

select sysdate from dual;
execute dbms_lock.sleep(900);
select sysdate from dual;

That way you could terminate you telnet session, log in again in a couple of
minutes
and check to see if the process is running, and in fact completes.

I am going to be executing a long running job this weekend from home. I am
going to VPN into the corp network and telnet to the server. I am affraid of
loosing my telnet terminal session and the job dying mid way through. The
plan is to use 'nohup sqlplus system/***** @long_running.sql'. Has anyone
used this or run into issues using it? Every time I assume something will
'just work', IT DOESNT!

Thanks
Erik
