There's a specific reason for that - mysql.org was run by NuSphere, a company that released an extended version of MySQL with a custom database engine. Mysql the corporation sued for trademark infringement on the name mysql, claiming that customers would be confused that the mysql.org listed version of mysql was the official one. MySQL AB won, and took the name over.
