Dear Florida Members;
For those of you who are in Charlie's path and busy loading your pets
(furry and feathered)into Midwest cages to leave the West coast, don't forget
to secure your greenhouses or shade houses. I have a portable garage that I
converted into a shade house, and I took the shade cloth off the roof. Don't
worry about sunburn, it will still be cloudy for a few days. Shade cloth acts
like a big sail that catches the wind. Also, put all your hanging orchids on
the ground and take the plants off the benches. Benches act like sails too! if
you have Lexan or Plexiglass walls, or even Polycarbonate, take some strong
tape and put big X s on the panels. My friend lives on an Orlando lake that
gets some mean wind, and she taped her polycarbonate. It didn't shred off
during the more severe thunderstorms.
if you have one of those 10 x 20 portable shelters that are popular to
convert into shade houses, I would say take it apart and just leave the roof
assembles over your plants. The stakes won't hold it and I have seen cement
blocks wrenched out. That geodesic dome greenhouse design I have stashed in my
closet is looking better and better.
Good luck everyone! Nancy has been there and done that. Anymore storm
advice would be most appreciated.
Regards,
nancy
