It would be interesting to obtain
- the names of the villages ;
- the names of the said internationals.
Ed also wrote : "Vietnamese authorities ... reacted by rounding up some of
the villagers and putting a bullet in their
heads".
Vietnamese authorities is a vague expression. It would be necessary to be
more precise :
if such actions did happen, under which legislation or authority did they
occur (municipal, regional, national) ?
Failing to obtain these precisions, I would conclude that such a dramatic
account should be treated as a rumor.
This whole discussion is futile. If things as "described" by Kovach
would have occurred, some (if not all) people
who regularly have gone to Vietnam and have employed local collectors,
would have heard about it.
I can only repeat: Kovach was bragging and Ed Merkle is too naive to
understand that.
And whoever made the comment about a live not being worth much in those
areas, should realize that
one should always clean in front of his/her own door first: cfr. Iraq,
Afghanistan, Guantanamo etc.
Viateur: your comparison with this and what happened in the 19th century
is ridiculous. In those days all explorers were
endangered on their trips. You cannot compare this with allegations that
Vietnamese authorities killed people because they
collected some orchids.
