For MPI implementations, I think the choice is clear: ship two versions
and let the package pick the Best one to install.
That should be the general scheme for all packages that are
performance-critical.
Of course, we could -- sometime in the Near Future -- drop support for RH
7.x and go forward with 8.x and MDK 9.x only. I mention this purely for
the sake of discussion -- I'm not necessarily advocating it. I should
note that such a course of action wouldn't necessarily fix the problem,
but it would just make it "go away" (for a while). :-)
