Hmm. Not sure I agree with that.

ntp will operate properly even if there is no valid server (i.e., it'll just keep the head node and client nodes in sync).

Oops -- let me re-phrase that:

"ntp will operate properly even if there is no valid higher stratum server to synchronize with."

Also, upon second thought, I'm not sure if my parenthetical is correct: by default, if there is no higher stratum server available to the OSCAR head node (for example), I *think* the ntpd on the head node will refuse to let the cluster nodes synchronize to it (because it recognizes that it is not synchronized to anything else).

I seem to recall that this does *not* cause an error -- meaning that the ntpd's will all happily be running, but they don't actually synchronize to anyone. If this is true, we really need a better test to check whether it's "working" (more specifically: ensuring that the head node has a valid higher stratum server to synchronize against, *OR* adding the proper stuff to the head node's config saying "don't synchronize to a higher stratum server, but take my time as the Correct Time, and let the cluster nodes synchronize against me" [i.e., the user selected "none" in the configurator, indicating that they don't want their OSCAR cluster to synchronize to the outside world]).

Someone should check this, though... my memory may not be correct here...

I mention this because it's critical that the cluster have synchronized time. Without it, NFS can do really wonky things.

Tempest fugit.
